Styrian-Bavarian success: Wrong police officers caught

Investigation success for the Styrian and Bavarian police: After the arrest of a German (21) in Graz at the end of December 2022, whose accomplices, acting as fake police officers, wanted to cheat an old lady out of a large sum of money, investigators in Munich arrested three other suspects. Two arrests were made on Thursday in Munich, one also in the Bavarian capital in January. Drugs and weapons were also found during house searches.

The cooperation began with the arrest of a so-called pick-up person for the Christmas holidays in 2022. A 73-year-old woman from Graz had been called by an unknown “senior police inspector” and “police emergency call officer”, then she was also connected to a “police psychologist”. Her assets are endangered by a gang of robbers on the run, she should get her cash from the bank and hand it over to the apartment door. The pensioner was harassed for three days until she wanted to withdraw a large sum of cash. For security reasons, however, this was not possible. The woman then became suspicious and sought advice from relatives, who advised her to call the police. This then set a trap for the “picker”, the 21-year-old German resident in Munich was arrested, as the APA police announced on Friday.

The Styrian police and the public prosecutor’s office in Graz contacted the authorities in Munich at the time: the cooperation led to the arrest of a 24-year-old accomplice with Turkish citizenship and residence in Munich. This arrest was kept secret for investigative tactical reasons. The man has now been transferred to Graz. Finally, the German and Austrian investigators found out the homes of two other suspects. On Thursday, German police officers then caught two more suspects, each 26 years old – at different addresses in Munich. They are a so-called “pick-up person” (a Bosnian) or a so-called “logistician”, a German who is higher in the hierarchy of such gangs and, among other things, organizes the collection of valuables from the victims. During the searches of the apartments, the Germans seized mobile phones, the evaluation of which should bring insights into the fraud in Austria.

The officials in Munich also confiscated several airsoft guns, stabbing weapons, brass knuckles, as well as cocaine and marijuana in “considerable quantities”. The two 26-year-olds are to be extradited to Austria. With the arrest of a “logistician”, the hitherto rather rare arrest of a higher-ranking gang member succeeded. The “collectors” usually travel extra to Austria for their “work”.

Interior Minister Gerhard Karner (ÖVP) congratulated the investigators in Austria and Germany on Friday: “Criminals who pretend to be police officers and cheat older fellow citizens out of thousands of euros act particularly unscrupulously. Our real police officers fight such activities with all consistency.”
