On Saturday, five young finalists once again demonstrated their skills at the “Styrian Harmonica Competition”. Finally, 13-year-old Laurenz Schlager from St. Andrä-Höch was able to convince in the Steinhalle Lannach.

It was with great excitement that the final round of the 28th “Styrian Harmonica Competition” began on Saturday afternoon. All five finalists demonstrated their skills in the Steinhalle Lannach by presenting a compulsory piece and a freestyle piece.

Marcel Halsmayr, Matthias Puntigam, Tobias Ruprechter, Laurenz Schlager and Johanna Steinegger: These five finalists were selected from dozens of applicants – and at the grand finale of the traditional competition, they not only impressed the jury, but also the viewers in front of the television screens. One of them ended up winning.

Laurenz Schlager from St. Andrä-Höch achieved a total of 72 points with his performances – “Almbleamerl Landler” (compulsory piece) and “Textilaku Marsch” (ceremonial piece) – and thus won the “Styrian Harmonica Competition 2023” as well as the first prize, a Styrian harmonica “Harmonica production Schmidt”. The jury was particularly enthusiastic about his freestyle piece “Textilaku Marsch” and awarded it ten points four times, making it the highest possible rating.
Marcel Halsmayr from Altenmarkt near St. Gallen took second place (71 points) with the performances “South of Mur and Mürz” (compulsory piece) and “Mein Gruß” (Kürstück) and with it a Styrian harmonica from the company “Strasser”.

Tobias Ruprechter from Gratwein-Straßengel (compulsory piece: “He goes one”, freestyle piece: “Simson Marsch”. 70 points) in third place as well as the participants Matthias Puntigam from Bruck an der Mur (compulsory piece: “Marsch der Steirer”, freestyle piece : “Ziaglgrab’n Landler”. 64 points) and Johanna Steinegger from Kammern im Liesingtal (compulsory piece: “Tanzboden Landler”, freestyle piece: “Memories of Seckau”. 62 points) were awarded valuable prizes from the Austrian Organizers Association. All five finalists also received non-cash prizes from the Steirisches Volksliedwerk.

The jury included the musician and presenter Franz Posch, the Radio Steiermark presenter Christine Gutzelnig, the folk musician and Radio Steiermark presenter Karl Lenz and Anna-Lisa Kröll, music student and winner of the “Styrian Harmonica Competition 2017”; The winner of the “Styrian Harmonica Competition 2022”, Leon Pühringer from St. Nikolai im Sausal, was also a guest on the show.

The harmonica competition could be experienced live on television again this year: an ORF Steiermark team led by director Robert Sturmer was in the Steinhalle Lannach with five cameras and a broadcast van and broadcast the 28th “Styrian Harmonica Competition” on ORF 2.
