Styriarte 2023: Unveiling Forgotten Composers and Reviving Beethoven’s Legacy

In the Palais Attems in Graz, the Styriarte starts with different concerts at different stations, on Saturday the last of the six planned operas by the Styrian composer Johann Joseph Fux has its premiere.

Another project deals with Beethoven, whose conversation books dramaturg Thomas Höft used as the basis for a play with music – more on this in Styriarte 2023 under the sign of the heroes (December 2, 2022).

entertainment and depth

The future of the Styriarte can be seen under the sign of “entertainment and depth” – but also this year’s program, according to director Mathis Huber. With “Costanza e fortezza” the last Fux opera festival takes place: “We wanted to bring Fux out of oblivion for a moment. We were aware that he was writing exclusively for a courtly audience, never for more than 300 people,” said Huber.

The only exception was “Costanza e fortezza”, an opera spectacle that took place in Prague in 1723 on a 200-meter-long outdoor stage for a larger group of invited guests. “It was the opera event of the century,” Huber is aware, which is why a concert version was deliberately chosen for this year in the courtyard of Schloss Eggenberg.

Theater with Beethoven developed for Styriarte

Beethoven is the focus of a play with music created especially for the festival. The starting point was the conversation notebooks of the increasingly hard-of-hearing composer, through which he communicated with his fellow human beings. “The language in the conversation books was not accessible,” said Hoeft, so he looked around in the letters and other documents. The piece also shows the “personal abysses” of the “more or less always drunk, bad-tempered and insufferable composer,” according to the dramaturge. Karl Markovics will be seen and heard as Beethoven, pianist Olga Chepovetsky will contribute the music.

Pupils made a journey through time with Beethoven’s texts

A school project is also about Beethoven, in which the young people “transported the composer’s texts into the media of the time,” explained Enya Reinprecht. The results will be presented in the Helmut List Hall.

Another world premiere is Manuela Kehrer’s piece “Hasta la vista, Baby”, which was created from quotes from Arnold Schwarzenegger and is performed at various stations in his home town of Thal – more on this in Styriarte organizes Nachnachhalts (April 14, 2023).

future of diversity

For the future, Huber envisions presenting “music in the middle of life”. To this end, music from the pre-bourgeois era is to be brought into the context in which it stood at the time – which means, above all, greater involvement of the audience. “We face the future, it will be a future of diversity,” the director is convinced.
