The successful run of the only 16-year-old Mirra Andreeva at the Tennis Grand Slam in Wimbledon ended on Monday in the round of 16. The Russian lost 6:3,6:7(4),2:6 to the number 25 seeded American Madison Keys after leading the set and 4:1 in the second half and missed the leap into the top eight. Defending champion Yelena Rybakina and Russia’s Daniil Medvedev benefited from tasks in their round of 16 duels.

Medvedev was already leading 6:4,6:2 against Jiri Lehecka before the Czech had to retire due to a foot injury. The number three seeded Russian is thus in the quarter-finals of the grass classic for the first time. Rybakina, 24, led 4-1 against Beatriz Haddad Maia when the Brazilian was unable to continue due to a hip problem. In the quarterfinals, the Belarusian meets Keys.

Andreyeva got off to a flying start with the confidence of six wins in a row in her first major round of 16. The brave teenager took the serve from Keys, who was twelve years his senior, three times with only one break and clearly won set one. In the second round, the Russian was already 4:1 in the lead, but Keys fought back and won the tie-break and then the third set in a sovereign manner. Keys is in the quarterfinals of the classic lawn for the first time since 2015.

It wasn’t the first time that Andreeva has caused a stir in the recent past. The Russian, who is ranked 102nd in the world, reached the third round in her first Grand Slam tournament, the French Open.
