Successfully introducing quality assurance into projects: Complete file

This involves understanding the quality of the design of a product by introducing quality assurance “locks” within your design project.

Project quality assurance consists of controlling physical and information flows through:

input data (the requirements relating to the product to be designed); output data (the project deliverables).

Project quality assurance also consists of controlling the main milestones of the design project, through:

planning QA locks; reviewing input data; design reviews; design verification steps; design validation steps; approving output data.

Fundamental point: input data

The input data is generally defined at the start of the design project.

They concern:

functional and performance requirements; regulatory and legal requirements applicable to the designed product; information from similar designs; requirements related to product design, such as manufacturing standards and best practices defined internally.

It is important that any input provided to the design project is reviewed to ensure that the requirements are complete, unambiguous and non-conflicting. Once the review has been carried out, the input data is applicable as such in the design project.

Classically, the input data can change while the project is already well advanced. It is for this reason that a systematic review must be carried out to ensure that the new requirements provided can be taken into account, with an impact assessed from a quality point of view on the design stages carried out.

Reviewing input data is the first step in project quality assurance.

The risk of taking into account uncontrolled input data will generate non-quality costs and possibly a risk of not meeting the project end date.

Within the meaning of the ISO 9001 version 2015 requirement – paragraph 8.3.3, the input data must be formalized completely and unambiguously in documented information allowing development.
