Sugar substitutes.. and the risk of heart attacks and strokes

A recent study published in the “Nature Medicine” medical journal found that artificial sweeteners that replace sugar, which most people use, may increase the risk of heart disease. According to researchers, these artificial alternatives consist of artificial substances that may negatively affect people’s hearts.

According to researchers at the Cleveland Clinic University Hospital, artificial sweeteners should not be considered a healthy and safe alternative to sugar, as they contain erythritol, which is known as a calorie-free sugar substitute.

According to the results of the study, this substance increases the risk of heart attacks in the long term, in addition to stroke.

Researchers looked at blood levels of this substance in more than 4,000 participants from the United States and Europe and found that people over the age of 60 who had high levels of erythritol either had already had heart attacks or had risk factors such as high blood pressure and diabetes.

And previous research had found a direct relationship between the consumption of artificial sugar substitutes and the incidence of heart disease, as previously announced by the World Health Organization during a report published last year that it did not support the use of artificial sweeteners as safe alternatives to sugar.
