ISLAMABAD, Pakistan— A suicide bomber detonated his explosives on Thursday during a funeral in Afghanistan’s northeast Badakhshan province, killing at least 13 people, authorities said.

A former Taliban policeman was among the dead and at least 30 people were injured in the blast near the Nabawi Mosque.reported Abdul Nafi Takor, a spokesman for the Ministry of the Interior. He warned that the number of victims could increase as the situation is clarified.

The Badakhshan governor’s office later said the attack was carried out by a suicide bomber and that “several of the seriously injured were flown by military helicopters to Kabul for further treatment.”

The funeral was for Mawlavi Nisar Ahmad Ahmadi, deputy governor of the region and who was killed by a car bomb in Faizabad, the capital of Badakhshan. That attack also killed the lieutenant governor’s driver and injured 10 other people.

Moazuddin Ahmadi, the provincial director of Information and Culture, said Safiullah Samim, a former Taliban police chief in Baghlan, was among those killed in Thursday’s attack.

No one immediately claimed responsibility for the attack, but the extremist group Islamic State, which is a rival to the Taliban, claimed responsibility for Tuesday’s attack.

Former Afghan President Hamid Karzai condemned the attack, saying in a tweet that bombing mosques is an act of “terrorism” that goes “against human and Islamic standards.”

On Wednesday, several Taliban officials attended Ahmadi’s funeral, as did hundreds of Faizabad residents.

Taliban military chief Fasihuddin Fitrat denounced the Islamic State attacks in Badakhshan and urged the community to cooperate with Taliban forces and report any suspicious activity in the area.

In December, another car bomb killed the Badakhshan police chief on his way to work. At the time, the regional affiliate of the Islamic State — known as Islamic State in Khorasan Province — claimed responsibility for that attack.
