On July 7, Jaroslav Hašek will be celebrating “The Good Soldier Švejk” as an anniversary production in front of the church St. Othmar Premiere.
On the occasion of the 15th anniversary, they were looking for a special piece, reports the director Andreas Berger. Hašek’s unfinished, anti-militaristic picaresque novel revolves around the protagonist Schwejk, who makes his way through life with cunning and wit and thus also shows the abuses in the Austro-Hungarian army in World War I. The production itself is very opulent this year. “There will be 20 different locations,” reveals Berger. Various windows are used and scenes that take place outdoors are “elaborately staged” in front of the scenes.

Also in the costume stock is deeply reached. More than 40 roles have to be filled with life – each of the 14 actors thus takes on two to three roles. The costume and role changes are planned with military precision, there will even be a dedicated assistant to help the actors. Language coaches also work with the actors, after all they come from different crown lands.

“Being able to play the role almost borders on mercy,” says leading actor Roder, who played Peppone in “Don Camillo und Peppone” last year. He will be in almost every scene. “The nice thing about Schwejk is that in the end you still don’t know if he’s like that or is he just pretending,” he says. You have to make sure that the role doesn’t drift into stupidity.
This year’s production will again feature live music under the direction of Max Paul required.
Advance sales have already begun and the play will be on view from July 7th to August 12th. Since 2008, the Sommertheater Mödling has welcomed more than 50,000 visitors to 15 productions – from “Jedermann” to “Volpone” under the direction of Berger.
