Sunbird resumes testing of app that aims to bring iMessage to Android

Last year, we followed the saga disastrous and Nothing to take the iMessage to your smartphone — which was done through the Nothing Chats app in partnership with Sunbirdwhich since 2022 has proposed launching a solution to run Apple’s messaging platform on any Android device.

Shortly after launch, several security holes were discovered in the software, which led to its cancellation and the suspension of Sunbird’s software development. Now, a few months after the whole mess, it looks like she’s back on the battlefield.

That’s because Sunbird announced today which is resuming testing of its application after making “comprehensive improvements” to its infrastructure back-endas well as an “exhaustive assessment” that resulted in updates to address issues identified last year — a process that was detailed on this page.

According to the company, there are more than 165 thousand Android smartphone users in the waiting list to use Sunbird in advance — demonstrating strong interest in the software. Invitations have already started to be sent out today and the process will be gradual “to ensure a smooth and scalable user onboarding process”.

In the email sent to users after signing up for the waiting list, the company points out that all iMessage features should work in the app — such as blue balloons in chats, full quality of images, videos, audios, groups and reactions — as well as, even exchanging messages via WhatsApp.

A great challenge

Even if it manages to build a secure solution to run iMessage on Android smartphones, Sunbird may have to face someone who doesn’t have much to gain from it: Apple. The company, it is worth remembering, was responsible for removing a solution of this kind from circulation recently: the Beeper Mini.

For Sunbird, however, Apple only shut down the competing app because it used reverse engineering to disguise itself as a genuine iMessage client — a method the company sees as different from its approach, which would merely provide a “bridge” between Android and iOS users.
