The Sundance Institute and the University of Colorado Boulder have formalized a year-round partnership ahead of the Sundance Film Festival’s Colorado debut, scheduled for January 21–31, 2027. The agreement integrates academic programs, student internships, volunteer initiatives, and sustainability research directly into the campus framework.
The Bottom Line:
- The Event: The Sundance Film Festival opens its first Boulder chapter from January 21 to January 31, 2027.
- The Partnership: CU Boulder secures its status as the official university partner, bringing Sundance Institute representatives to campus for classroom visits, symposiums, and student-only filmmaker conversations.
- Student Access: At least 100 students will secure volunteer roles, 30 will join a Student Advisory Board, and an initial pilot internship program will place at least eight students in hands-on roles alongside press credential opportunities for student journalists.
Shaping the Next Wave of Independent Storytelling in Boulder
According to announcements released by both organizations, the collaboration spans cocurricular planning, tiered volunteer frameworks, discounted and free screenings, and targeted sustainability initiatives.
Per the agreement, participants will receive discounted Festival tickets, free on-campus screenings, and exclusive conversations with visiting filmmakers. At least 100 CU Boulder students will staff the festival as volunteers, while a newly established Student Advisory Board composed of at least 30 students will actively shape the campus-side festival experience.
“Great universities do more than simply prepare students for the future. They connect them to the people, ideas, and experiences that shape it. Our partnership with the Sundance Film Festival makes those connections possible,” said CU Boulder Chancellor Justin Schwartz.
Bridging Campus Life and the Industry Core
The partnership extends far beyond a ten-day cinematic showcase. Between July 2026 and June 2027, campus itineraries will feature regular visits from Sundance Institute representatives engaging with first-year courses, capstone projects, research events, and student organizations.
Aspiring industry professionals will also find concrete footings through a pilot internship program targeting at least eight students, alongside access to official festival press credentials for qualifying student journalists.
“CU Boulder and the Sundance Film Festival share values that embrace innovation, creative expression, and the universal power of storytelling,” said Eugene Hernandez, Director, Sundance Film Festival and Public Programming. “We’re excited to engage with students, faculty, and staff on campus, during the Festival, and well beyond, as we integrate these shared values and new perspectives within the academic and cultural experience of the university.”
Interdisciplinary Research and Sustainability Frameworks
The collaboration also addresses the ecological realities of mounting a world-class film gathering. Sundance Institute will provide direct support to students enrolled in CU Boulder’s Masters of the Environment program. Together, they will build an applied research framework designed to measure and mitigate greenhouse gas emissions associated with the festival.
