The Superior Court of Bogotá increased from seven to 13 years and eight months the sentence imposed against the influence Aida Victoria Merlano, who was found responsible for the acts of complicity so that her mother, former congresswoman Aida Merlano, escaped and evaded the authorities in middle of a judicial mess.

The Court magistrate convicted Merlano for the crimes of prisoner escape (as an accomplice) and use of minors to commit crimes. It was a second instance ruling. Initially, the sentence imposed had been 90 months (seven years and five months). However, it was appealed by all the parties involved, which led to the modification of the sentence.

Once the ruling was known, Miguel Ángel del Río, defense lawyer, announced that he would go before the Supreme Court of Justice so that, by means of an appeal, the sentence could be annulled on the grounds that his client did not participate in the escape of his mother, which occurred in October 2019 when she attended a dental appointment.

Former congresswoman Aida Merlano Rebolledo was convicted in September 2019 of conspiracy to commit a crime and buying votes, but she was a fugitive from justice for four months until she was captured by the Bolivarian National Police of Venezuela in Maracaibo.

She remained detained there until she was extradited to Colombia on March 10, 2023.
