Supermassive Games Announces Potential Layoffs of Up to 75 Employees

British developer Supermassive Games has confirmed a consultation process that may result in up to 75 layoffs. The studio, known for Until Dawn and The Dark Pictures Anthology, cited long-term financial stability as the driver behind the cuts, marking the second major workforce reduction at the company within a year.

Consultation Process Threatens Seventy-Five Roles

Supermassive Games announced the potential layoffs via an official statement on the social media platform X. The studio behind the cinematic horror titles stated that the restructuring is necessary to secure its future. The company is currently engaged in a consultation process with its workforce regarding the proposed reduction.

We’ve taken the difficult decision to enter into a consultation period that may result in up to 75 role losses, Supermassive Games stated in its official announcement. This is a necessary step to secure the long-term stability of the company. Our priority is to support all those affected through this process.

This development follows an earlier round of cuts in July 2025, during which approximately 36 employees lost their jobs. The studio has faced multiple leadership changes during this turbulent period. In June, Robert Henrysson stepped down as chief executive officer, a position he held since the beginning of 2024, citing a desire to focus on family and personal investments.

Project Timelines and Market Pressures

The studio’s recent operational hurdles extend to its release schedule. Supermassive delayed its sci-fi horror title, Directive 8020, which ultimately launched in May 2026. The game received a mixed critical reception, holding a 72-point aggregate score on Metacritic.

Historically, Supermassive built its reputation on interactive drama. Until Dawn became a major success for the PlayStation platform and received a film adaptation earlier this year. While the first four entries in The Dark Pictures Anthology were published by Bandai Namco, Directive 8020 marked a shift toward self-publishing for the developer.

The workforce reduction at Supermassive mirrors an ongoing contraction across the interactive entertainment sector. Numerous developers, ranging from independent teams to large AAA studios, have implemented cost-cutting measures in response to climbing production expenses and tightening market conditions.

Broader Industry Contraction and Financial Reality

Supermassive has not yet confirmed the final timeline for the conclusion of its current employee consultation process.
