On the day of the Sewol ferry disaster, former President Park Geun-hye’s former chief of staff Kim Ki-chun (84), who was charged with manipulating the time reported afterward, was confirmed innocent.

The second division of the Supreme Court (Presiding Judge Lee Dong-won) upheld the lower court’s verdict acquitting former chief Kim, who was charged with creating and exercising false public documents.

On April 16, 2014, when the Sewol ferry disaster occurred, former chief Kim was handed over to trial in March 2018 on charges of submitting information to the National Assembly that was not true, such as the time when former President Park was first reported by wire and whether or not it was reported in real time. .

In both the first and second trials, Kim was sentenced to 1 year in prison and 2 years of probation, recognizing that the written response to the National Assembly was a false official document.

However, the Supreme Court returned the case in August of last year with the purpose of innocence, saying that the part of the answer that stated the facts could not be considered false, and that the rest were only opinions, so the charges were not established.

According to the judgment of the Supreme Court, the court of the remand trial acquitted former chief Kim, and the prosecution appealed again, disobeying this, but the Supreme Court dismissed the prosecution’s appeal.
