Internet connection in the globalized world of the 21st century is necessary, and that is why there are several studies that measure connectivity in countries. SurfShark’s 2023 Digital Quality of Life Index determined which countries provide the best digital services. The study measures which nations have the “highest digital well-being.”
The study showed that the first nine positions in the ranking are led by European countries. “France, which ranks first in Internet affordability, and fifth in quality, is among the top 20 in electronic infrastructure, security and government,” says one of the conclusions. The European country is in first place overall. Finland and Denmark are in second and third place, respectively. Germany, Luxembourg, Spain and Latvia continue in the ranking.
It is important to note that internet affordability is measured by how long people in countries have to work to have a stable internet connection. Internet quality is another of the items evaluated and consists of measuring how fast and stable the internet connectivity is. Likewise, the electronic infrastructure evaluates whether the connection is supported with optimal providers to allow the use of the Internet.
Regarding electronic security, the study states that it is “the ability to counter cybercrime and protect online privacy.”
How is Colombia?
It is natural, according to the report, to think that the richest nations are those with greater digital well-being. However, Surfshark found that 22 countries “exceeded expectations in their GDP per capita range. Their higher scores in e-security, infrastructure and governance improved their overall digital well-being ranking,” it says.
Among these countries is Colombia, along with Peru, Brazil, Argentina and Chile. The country is ranked 58th among 121 countries, which represent 92% of the world’s population.
