In June there was another strong boost in new registrations after 20 percent in May: the Federal Motor Transport Authority recorded 280,139 new registrations of passenger cars last month. That was 24.8 percent more than in the same month last year. However, the growth is mainly due to commercial owners. Their registrations increased by 34.4 percent, their share was 69.3 percent. Private new registrations increased by 7.2 percent in the month under review. Compared to the first six months of the previous year, registrations for the first half of the year increased by 12.8 percent to 1,396,870 new vehicles. As the Association of the Automotive Industry notes, this is still around a quarter less than in the pre-crisis year of 2019.
With the exception of BMW, with a marginal decline, all German brands achieved higher sales figures in June than a year ago. VW remained the market leader with a 19 percent share. In the half-year results, only Opel (minus 5.7 percent) and Ford (-4.8 percent) lagged behind the result of the same period of the previous year. The signs were also positive for most import brands. Skoda remained the most successful foreign brand in June with a market share of 5.3 percent.
The SUVs continued their triumphal procession last month: according to the classification of the KBA, their segment accounts for 31.4 percent of all new registrations (+31.6 percent). With more than 13 percent growth, there was also growth again for small cars. They accounted for 11.4 percent of all new cars sold last month and were the third most popular vehicle class after compacts.
New registrations of purely electric cars increased by more than 64 percent compared to June 2022 to 52,988 units. In a half-year comparison, growth was almost 32 percent. After the end of the subsidy, the share of plug-in hybrids continued to fall in June, by 39.2 percent. Compared to the same month of the previous year, petrol engines increased by almost 20 percent, their market share was 35.6 percent. In the case of diesel-powered new cars, there was a 10.3 percent increase in registrations and a share of 16.7 percent. The number of liquid gas cars almost doubled to 2111, while 157 new registrations of natural gas vehicles were sufficient for an increase of 35.3 percent,
The average CO2 emissions of all new cars was 115.1 grams per kilometer. That is 2.3 percent less than in June of the previous year. For the first six months, the bottom line is an increase of 0.7 percent to 121 grams. (aum)
