Survey Reveals Majority of German Drivers Depend on Roadside Assistance for Flat Tires: Apollo Tires Report

The majority of people driving in Germany would not try to fix a flat tire on the side of the road themselves. This is the result of a survey of 1,000 respondents commissioned by the tire manufacturer Apollo Tires. Only 40 percent of them said they would use the spare tire or tire repair kit that came with the vehicle.

34 percent would instead call roadside assistance and 22 percent would ask a family member, friend or colleague for help. 14 percent of people surveyed said they didn’t know if their vehicle was equipped with a spare tire or an emergency tire inflation kit.

Older drivers are more willing to tackle the repair themselves. According to the survey, 55 percent of people aged 55 to 64 would use the spare tire or emergency tire kit, compared to 35 percent of those aged 25 to 34. 33 percent of all women surveyed stated that they would fix the breakdown with a spare tire or a tire inflation kit. Of the men surveyed, 56 percent would carry out repairs themselves.

Yves Pouliquen, Group Head of Sales and Marketing at Apollo Tyres, says: “Our survey shows that younger drivers are the least able to repair a flat tire themselves. It would therefore be advantageous to provide all learner drivers with instructions and to assess this knowledge as part of the driving test.” (aum)
