Surviving an Unprovoked Attack: Raphaël’s Story of Resilience and Seeking Justice

On November 28 around 7:30 p.m. Raphaël was leaving the metro in Gilly coming from Charleroi where he had left his vehicle broken down. Since he got on the subway train, a strange feeling had invaded him. He didn’t feel comfortable after noticing a man following him and staring at him intently. When he arrived in Gilly, the man threw himself on him, throwing him onto the tram rails. In the fall, Raphaël literally exploded his knee and bruised his ankle. Injuries aggravated by the right he had taken beforehand.

Although no one had moved to help him, he was able to extricate himself from the tracks and call a friend to take him to hospital. On the way, he meets his attacker and decides to follow him while calling the police. Although Raphaël suffered martyrdom, he took it upon himself, imagining that the precious details he provided directly to his interlocutor would enable an arrest as quickly as possible. Unfortunately, Raphaël must have become disillusioned, no one intervened and it was three days later on his hospital bed that a police officer came to take his statement.

Today, if morale is much better, it is a new shock for the computer scientist. Wandering through his news feed he discovers that another person was also attacked in the same place… for a pack of cigarettes for 12 euros. The victim, a woman, was just as brutally assaulted in the same place as he had been a month ago. Reading the description of the attack on social networks, Raphaël’s blood runs cold because it reminds him of his own aggression. “When I read that, and even though I’m not an investigator, I recognized the attacker’s method. Plus it was at the same times and in the same place. The description of the attacker also reminds me of more than my own. ”

The free movement of the violent individual is confirmed by a video sent by his friend who took him to the hospital. “What’s more, I received a video with the guy calmly smoking a cigarette in front of his house. I could not believe my eyes. ”
Raphaël does not hesitate for a single second and calls the local police but unfortunately the person who took the interview is not there and the person on the line can do nothing for him. “When I rang, the person in charge of my file was not there. As it was 101 that I had contacted to describe my attacker while we were following him, I was advised to call 101 again. I came across a person who could do nothing for me except refer me to the local police in Charleroi. I called again but still nothing. The person who was in charge of my file seems to be the only one who can intervene. It is clear that I felt that this person was very involved but what I regret is that we cannot find a speaker even though we have provided everything as information. I am incapacitated, a lady was attacked and the attacker is calmly walking around. It is not normal ! Just when I was about to give up again and decide to give up, I received a call from the police who wanted to see me. I welcomed them and passed on all the information. They were very professional and immediately understood who I was talking about. It appears that the designated person is already known to the police. ” Once the police officers left, Raphaël relaxed and a weight had just lifted from his shoulders. “Although I would never act like this, I can understand those who have ideas of taking the law into their own hands. This is not a solution, I repeat. Justice is there but it is complicated. We must persevere even if, unfortunately, people have been attacked gratuitously,” concludes Raphaël relieved.

After taking a right, Raphaël found himself on the rails with a blown knee, hoping not to be crushed by the metro train.
