Nine sailors from the Iranian destroyer Dena arrived at Shiraz Airport on Thursday, greeted by hundreds of well-wishers and family members following their return from an extended deployment in international waters.
The crew disembarked from a military transport aircraft shortly after 10 a.m. Local time, carrying personal belongings and wearing their naval uniforms. Emotional reunions unfolded on the tarmac as relatives embraced the sailors, some of whom had not seen their families in over eight months.
Officials from the Islamic Republic of Iran Navy confirmed the sailors were part of the Dena’s complement that had been operating in the Gulf of Aden as part of a multinational anti-piracy task force. The destroyer had been deployed since early 2024, conducting maritime security patrols under a rotational agreement with allied naval forces.
According to naval sources, the Dena’s mission concluded without incident, and the vessel remains stationed at Bandar Abbas Naval Base. The returning sailors were selected for early repatriation based on completion of their individual deployment cycles, a standard procedure confirmed by the navy’s personnel command.
Local authorities in Shiraz facilitated the welcome ceremony, coordinating with naval liaisons to manage crowd flow and ensure security. Banners reading “Welcome Home, Heroes of the Sea” and “Gratitude to Our Naval Forces” were displayed along the airport approach route.
Family members spoke briefly with reporters, expressing relief and pride. One mother, identifying herself only as the parent of a sailor, said, “We prayed every day for their safe return. Seeing them walk toward us, healthy and whole, is a blessing.”
The Iranian Ministry of Defense issued a brief statement acknowledging the crew’s service, noting their adherence to international maritime protocols and their role in safeguarding vital shipping lanes. No further details about the destroyer’s current status or upcoming deployments were provided.
As of Friday morning, the sailors had proceeded to their respective hometowns across Fars Province, with no public appearances scheduled. The navy has not announced when the remainder of the Dena’s crew will return or when the vessel might undertake its next operational rotation.
