An arrest warrant has been officially issued for a suspect in connection with the fatal shooting of a Tucson police recruit and the wounding of his fiancée, according to local authorities.
Investigators from the Pima County Sheriff’s Department have named 33-year-old Alex James Barnett as a primary suspect in the murder of 23-year-old Carlos Ramirez. The warrant for Barnett’s arrest was publicly released on the evening of August 20, 2026, via social media channels as deputies continue to search for multiple individuals believed to be involved in the violent home invasion.
The deadly confrontation occurred shortly before 6 a.m. at a residence situated south of Camino Verde and Valencia roads, specifically near Mountain Star Drive and Yedra Road. Emergency responders arriving at the scene discovered two victims suffering from gunshot wounds inside the home. Carlos Ramirez, who was a member of the Tucson Police Department’s Basic Recruit Class 26-1 and a former corrections officer, was pronounced dead at the scene. His 23-year-old fiancée, who currently works as a corrections officer for the Pima County Sheriff’s Department, sustained non-life-threatening injuries and was transported to a local hospital, where she was listed in stable condition.
The Investigation and Suspect Vehicle
As the Pima County Sheriff’s Department leads the ongoing homicide investigation, authorities have released surveillance footage showing a third unidentified suspect linked to the case. Officials have previously described the suspects as including two individuals dressed in all-black clothing and ski masks, alongside a third accomplice.

Investigators have also recovered a vehicle matching the description of the one used by the suspects. According to department announcements on social media, the car—identified as a gray SUV, specifically a 2007-2013 Acura MDX that may be missing its fuel door—was located abandoned in a parking lot near Palo Verde Road and 33rd Street.
Public safety officials have urged anyone with information regarding the whereabouts of Alex James Barnett or the remaining unidentified suspects to come forward immediately. Tips can be directed by calling 911 referencing case number 260819030, or by contacting local crime stoppers programs.
Community Impact and Tributes
Tucson Police Chief Monica Prieto publicly described Ramirez’s death as a “tremendous loss” for both the department and the community at large. At the time of the shooting, Ramirez had completed 23 weeks of rigorous training at the Southern Arizona Law Enforcement Training Center and was just days away from graduating from the police academy on August 27.

Colleagues and friends have rallied around the surviving fiancée and her family during the aftermath of the tragedy. Brynn Perez, a corrections sergeant who reported working closely with the wounded officer, organized an online fundraising campaign to help alleviate financial burdens for the family. The fundraiser gained substantial traction, raising more than $10,300 within its first couple of days. Meanwhile, representatives for the Ramirez family have requested privacy and declined media interviews as the criminal investigation moves forward.
