Mobility, diversity, new working time models and environmental protection: Sustainability is now a top priority in many companies

Vienna (OTS) – “No company can ignore the issue of sustainability anymore. As a representative of interests, we are therefore sharpening up here and starting a comprehensive service offensive for the companies. We support them on their way towards more sustainability,” says Walter Ruck, President of the Vienna Chamber of Commerce.

WK Wien offers support with a sustainability check

For this reason, the Vienna Chamber of Commerce is expanding its range of services for companies in the area of sustainability. A new addition is the free sustainability check (www.ratgeber.wko.at/nachhaltigkeit). This shows where the company stands and in which areas there is still potential. The check includes a variety of topics and questions: from the company’s carbon footprint and flexible working time models to compliance with social and environmental standards at suppliers or the promotion of sustainable mobility on official business trips for employees. Those who complete the sustainability check receive an overview of how well the various aspects of sustainability are already being taken into account in the company.

Numerous legal requirements as part of the European Green Deal on the way towards climate neutrality form the framework for the transformation of the economy. At the end of 2022, for example, the obligation for companies to provide information about sustainability aspects was newly regulated at European level. Sustainability reporting will have to be geared towards this in the future.

What the sustainability check brings

In any case, the companies have to retrofit. Because the raising funds (EU taxonomy) and evidence in the supply chain are linked even more closely to sustainability criteria in the future. This is part of the obligation for companies to provide information on sustainability aspects, which has been decided at EU level. The Sustainability check by the Vienna Chamber of Commerce is intended for companies provide orientation on the way to more sustainability, create benefits and as a result offers:

Summary information on the current sustainability status of the company A checklist with concrete suggestions for measures so that the company can act even more sustainably Recommendations for action tailored to the company with time horizons, tips and information on further services and subsidies

Sustainability is becoming increasingly important for companies

In addition to the efforts of companies in terms of climate protection, they are concerned with the increasing demand from consumers for clean, sustainably produced and biologically valuable products. Despite current inflation, this trend is irreversible. Actually, inflation is even the driver of the new sustainability thinking in companies. Because those who operate more efficiently and deal more sustainably with resources, energy and the environment are more successful. However, operational sustainability is not only an issue in the environmental area – treating suppliers, customers and employees with respect is just as important.

“Companies are aware of their role in society as a whole. People and the environment are moving even more into the focus of operational considerations,” says Ruck, referring to the results of a global Deloitte study of 2,000 company managers. Their conclusion is: Sustainability remains a top priority for companies. It showed that economic prospects, innovation and supply chains are the biggest challenges for the companies. Right after that comes climate change. More than half also expect climate change to have a high to very high impact on strategy and operations within the next three years.
