55,937 SUVs and off-road vehicles were newly registered in Austria in the first half of 2023. One in five of them in Vienna – which is once more the federal state with the most SUVs in the new registration statistics. The share of SUVs in new passenger car registrations has doubled since 2015 and has quintupled since 2005. The proportion of cars that are not suitable for bad roads is currently 44.5 percent, with the larger SUVs in particular having a very high proportion of plug-in hybrids, as the Austrian Traffic Club (VCÖ) calculated on Friday.
