Suviana Dam, the water is rising. “Little hope” of finding the missing alive –

The toll from the explosion that occurred yesterday afternoon in the Suviana hydroelectric power plant, on the Bolognese Apennines, is three confirmed dead, five seriously injured and four missing. The first reconstructions speak of the explosion of a turbine on the day of testing of a part of the plant. The accident occurred on floor -8, under the lake, and overwhelmed the workers who were on -9. The toll of the tragedy could be even heavier. “We are not working with much hope of finding the missing alive, the scenario before us does not give us this idea”, explains Luca Cari, communication manager of the Fire Brigade, who are operating in prohibitive conditions inside the Bargi hydroelectric power plant of the Suviana artificial basin.

“The situation is very difficult, the water is rising, we are working below the lake level so with the water coming in. We have to work safely”, explains Cari again. “We are already at 40 centimeters on floor -8 where we were working with the search teams”, he adds, “this is a very difficult situation with risk and danger for our operators”. Every effort is being made to locate and recover those missing tens of meters underground, trapped in the structure of the power plant, but hopes are fading by the hour.
