In Austria, building land is hoarded at will. Many who own a dedicated piece of land do not want to build on it or sell it. They don’t want the neighboring property to be developed or, according to another argument, they keep it – often for decades. The children or grandchildren might need it later. But the reality is different in many cases: the young people move away and often don’t want to or can’t build a single-family home on a green meadow in the country.
