MELBOURNE: Defending champions United States are out of the 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup. Sweden upset the US in the pre-quarters. With this win, Sweden reached the quarter-finals. In another match, Netherlands also reached the quarter-finals by defeating South Africa.
Sweden overthrew the US in a sudden death match at the Melbourne Stadium. The match went to a penalty shootout after both teams failed to score in regulation time and extra time. In the shootout, both teams were tied at 3-3. Andy Sullivan, Lindsay Horan and Christy Mewis scored for the US and Fridolina Rolfo, Elin Rubenson and Hannah Bennison scored for Sweden.
