Sweden’s Path to NATO Membership: Expanding Alliance Cooperation and Combating Terrorism

Sweden will be able to join the North Atlantic Alliance if it fulfills its obligations to combat terrorism, which stem from the Madrid Memorandum signed last June, the Turkish authorities reminded their partners in the alliance.

This was stated by the head of the Turkish military department, Yashar Güler, following the results of the NATO ministerial meeting in Brussels, TRT channel reports.

The minister stressed that during the bilateral talks with Stockholm, Ankara “reported support for NATO’s open door policy and that Sweden, with the specific fulfillment of the obligations enshrined in the tripartite memorandum, will be able, like Finland, to join NATO.
