For the Swedish king, the last day of celebrations for his golden jubilee is all about the people. Of course, a few Abba songs should not be missing at an anniversary concert – even if not from the original.

Sweden’s King Carl XVI Gustaf ended his 50th anniversary on the throne with a ride in a magnificent carriage and a joyful anniversary concert. At the end of the multi-day celebrations, the 77-year-old monarch was driven through the center of Stockholm with Queen Silvia (79) on Saturday.

Thousands of onlookers lined the streets to catch a glimpse of the king and his wife, dressed entirely in yellow. The following concert represented a musical journey through time through the 50 years of his time on the throne – from Abba to Sweden’s recent victory at the Eurovision Song Contest (ESC).

Carl Gustaf’s actual anniversary was on Friday. On that day it was exactly 50 years ago that he became King of Sweden after the death of his grandfather – then at the young age of 27. Initially inexperienced and clumsy, the king developed into a head of state respected and valued by the people. Today he is the longest-reigning monarch in Swedish history and one of the longest-serving officials in the world.

Crown Princess Victoria calls father “a role model”

Silvia Sommerlath, who was born in Heidelberg and met Carl Gustaf at the 1972 Olympics in Munich and married four years later, particularly contributed to the popularity of the royal family. The king showed how much she means to him at a celebratory anniversary banquet on Friday evening. “I could never have had a better companion,” he said to the queen.

He himself also received warm words at the banquet. «Your Majesty, dear Papa, you have been King of Sweden for 50 years. You have been my father for almost as long – and always a role model,” said his eldest daughter Crown Princess Victoria (46), who will one day inherit his throne. “You are a constant, a security – for me and also for many others.”

While Carl Gustaf was honored on Friday by the heads of state of the other Nordic states, Saturday was all about the Swedish people for the monarch. In sunshine and blue skies, he and Silvia drove through the streets of Stockholm in a 19th-century horse-drawn carriage before, after a short transfer to the car, they were taken back to the castle in the royal launch “Vasaorden”. When the royal couple disembarked there, cheers broke out in the gathered crowd.

Abba songs echo through the streets of Stockholm

This applause continued again and again at the anniversary concert in front of the castle. In King’s honor, pictures from the five decades of his time on the throne were shown and songs from the individual eras of Sweden’s musical nation were sung. The legendary pop group Abba was missing, but not their music: the pop duo Klara & Jag sang a medley of the band’s world hits, including “Waterloo”, “Mamma Mia” and of course “Dancing Queen”.

Victoria and her daughter Princess Estelle (11) in particular sang and swayed along to the songs. The two-time ESC winner Loreen sang “Tattoo”, the song that brought Sweden victory in the European music competition this year. The extremely popular musician Björn Skifs then sang the classic “Hooked on a Feeling”. “A fantastic performance,” the king praised the assembled artists. “This is a wonderful day and afternoon.”
