Winner of the 50m freestyle at the Nice and St-Germain-en-Laye meetings, Florent Manaudou confided in Marion Bartoli’s show on RMC that he felt very good four months before the Paris Olympic Games, where he dreams to be the standard bearer of the French delegation.

Last Monday, he won the 50m freestyle at the Nice meeting in 21″95. On Saturday, he did it again in St-Germain-en-Laye, winning in 21″98. Four months before the Paris Olympic Games, for which he is not yet officially qualified (he will have to pass the minimums, set at 21″96, during the French championships in Chartres in June), Florent Manaudou is on time. Sunday, at the microphone of Bartoli Time on RMC, the swimmer confided his satisfaction: “Even if the time is the same, the way was very different. I’m very happy to have done less than 22 seconds and to have won. I’m in the middle of a training load period, it’s very good, I’m taking a lot of cues,” explains Manaudou, who will take part in the meetings in Lyon and Barcelona between now and the French championships. At 33, the four-time Olympic medalist knows that his experience can work in his favor when the Paris 2024 deadline comes. Swimming doesn’t necessarily make you happy if it’s done incorrectly. You have to listen to yourself a lot. We are in pure effort. There is no concept of play in swimming. We can’t talk, it’s a tough sport. You have to find the balance between the notion of mentality and pleasure, and performance. This is what I have found since 2021. Physically, I am a little less well because I am getting older, I need to recover better, to pay attention to what I eat. We are all capable of being physically well, but to perform you need to be in the perfect state of mind during major championships. »

Manaudou: “It’s something that makes me dream”

State of mind, a crucial concept, and Florent Manaudou is ready to put additional pressure on himself by running as a candidate to be the standard bearer of the French delegation in Paris. “ I would be very proud to lead the French team during the opening ceremony, which will be unique, and to lead the French team throughout the Olympic Games. It’s something that makes me dream. When I see the previous standard bearers, they are people who have been inspirations for me, so if one day I am a standard bearer, that would mean that I am an inspiration for young people and that would make me extremely happy. It wouldn’t be a pressure on me, it would be something that galvanizes me. I am very happy that it is the athletes who vote. » Florent Manaudou has already participated in the Olympic Games, without ever having been a flag bearer, and has a clean criminal record. It therefore corresponds to the criteria established to carry the blue-white-red flag on July 26.
