Fribourg-Gottéron is back in the lead 3-2 in the quarter-final series against Lugano and still needs a win to reach the semi-finals. The qualifying runners-up win 1-0 at home.

The only goal was scored by Chris DiDomenico in the 24th minute with Friborg’s fifth power play goal of the series. The Canadian caught Niklas Schlegel in the near corner because Lucas Wallmark had perfectly blocked the Lugano goalie’s view. DiDomenico also scored in the fifth game of this quarterfinal; he now has two goals and four assists.

It was Friborg’s seventh goal in the middle third in this series, while the Bianconeri have never scored in the second 20 minutes. The home team didn’t allow much in the final third and deserved to win overall, even if Lugano had some good chances, especially in the first third.

Freiburg keeper Reto Berra celebrated his second shutout in the current championship thanks to 30 saves. He achieved the first on December 21st, also against Lugano (3-0). The last time a playoff game in the National League ended 1-0 was on April 9, 2013. At that time Gottéron was also involved and won against Bern.

This time both teams acted very disciplined after no less than 52 two-minute penalties were given in the first four games. There were only three outnumbered situations. The sixth game takes place on Tuesday in Lugano. If the Ticino team loses again, they will fail in the quarterfinals for the fifth time in a row. Friborg, which has never won the championship, last reached the semi-finals in 2022.
