Swiss justice clears Belgian lawyer of Moroccan origin after legal proceedings that lasted 10 years

“After a legal whirlwind that lasted nearly ten years and two stays in prison, the former lawyer at the Luxembourg bar of Moroccan origin, Farida Chorfi, 60, has been completely cleared by Swiss justice”, reports the Luxembourg newspaper. Wort in its edition of January 29, 2023. His name has been linked to the so-called “Spoelberch legacy” case. Me Chorfi is a former Belgian lawyer who notably practiced in the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg. She counted among her clients the illustrious Viscountess Amicie de Spoelberch, an heiress of the world’s leading brewing group AB InBev. Following her death, Farida Chorfi became the lawyer for the two heir sons. The latter accuse him of having attempted to embezzle 327,600 shares placed in a safe deposit box of the Natixis bank in Luxembourg and of having laundered them via various offshore companies.

She was sentenced in 2016 by the Luxembourg Court of Appeal to 24 months’ imprisonment, 15 of which were suspended. Then, in 2019, Farida was sentenced to 30 months in prison, including 15 suspended, a judgment rendered by the Geneva Criminal Court, for the charges of aggravated money laundering and forgery in titles. She was forced to transfer to the heirs the sum of 35 million euros as compensation.

The lawyer clings to her innocence and appeals to the Geneva Court of Appeal. On January 19, 2023, the Court gave him justice. It first cleared it and allowed it to also regain control of the 327,600 shares found. That’s not all. The court also asked the heirs to return the sum of 35 million.
