At least six people were killed and five others injured when a Swiss PostBus caught fire in the town of Chiètres, Switzerland, on Monday. Four of the injured are in serious condition, with one transported to hospital by helicopter, according to police in the Canton of Fribourg.
While the cause of the fire remains unknown, investigators are focusing on the possibility of a deliberate act. “You’ll see testimonies that speak of a person who acted deliberately with an incendiary device,” Frédéric Papaux, a spokesperson for the Canton of Fribourg police, told the Le Temps newspaper.
Authorities stated they expect to interview passengers and survivors as part of the investigation. Police have not commented on the possibility of a terrorist act, emphasizing that the inquiry is in its early stages.
One of those injured is a first responder who attempted to rescue victims from the burning bus. The number of passengers on board the PostBus at the time of the incident remains unknown.
Swiss PostBuses, recognizable by their yellow color, punctuality and distinctive three-tone horns used to warn of approaching vehicles on winding roads, are an iconic transportation service connecting rural and mountainous communities, often in remote areas. Originally established to deliver mail, they are known locally as “postales.”
“This tragic news deeply affects us all,” said Car Postal, the company responsible for the service, in a statement. “Our thoughts are with the injured and the families of the deceased. Starting tomorrow, a psychological support team will be available to employees.” Car Postal confirmed it is in constant contact with authorities investigating the incident.
Videos circulating on social media, captured by bystanders, show the bus engulfed in flames.
