Switzerland no longer shines!

5G speeds, according to Opensignal.

The inevitable happened. Switzerland is now clearly less well positioned internationally when it comes to the availability and speed of its 5G networks. All operators combined, it is now positioned between 20th and 30th place, according to a ranking established by Opensignal.

The specialist in comparisons and evaluation of networks specifies that its users were connected on average about 17% of the time to the last generation network of the three national operators. For comparison, this figure reaches 48% in Puerto Rico, 43% in South Korea and around 39% in Kuwait. In France, this figure exceeds 20%.

Less impressive speeds

To return to Switzerland, the average speed is around 189 Mbits/sec. In South Korea, mobile users experience an average speed of around 432 Mbits/sec. In Singapore, this figure is still 376 Mbits/sec, while it drops to 346 Mbits/sec in Brazil. In France, the average speed is around 222 Mbits/sec, again according to Opensignal.

The specialist in network measurement gives another interesting indication. In Switzerland, for example, 5G is on average 3.6x faster than 4G. In France, this figure climbs to 4.5x. Once again, distant countries are benefiting the most from the migration to 5G. In India, Malaysia and Sri Lanka, this new technology multiplies speeds by 19x, 14x and more than 13x respectively.

Incredible flow peaks

Opensignal is also able to give an average value of 5G speed peaks. In Switzerland, we reach more than 604 Mbits/sec, against 633 in France. But it is Bahrain which does the best with 1163 Mbits/sec, ahead of South Korea with its 925 Mbits/sec and 878 Mbits/sec on the side of the United Arab Emirates.

In terms of uploading, Switzerland is positioned very favorably with more than 36 Mbits/sec, against less than 18 Mbits/sec in France. South Korea, Guatemala and Indonesia are the best with values approaching 42 Mbits/sec.

What to think? We always wonder what these results are worth. The values indicated for Switzerland seem however to correspond fairly well for the speeds. On the other hand, in terms of availability, these figures are quite surprising since Swisscom and Sunrise UPC cover almost all of Switzerland in 5G, while Salt continues to progress.
