For months, the housing shortage in Switzerland has been on everyone’s lips. And the phenomenon continues to get worse. In the space of one year, the vacancy rate, including individual houses, has decreased by 0.16 points to fall to 1.15% of the housing stock on June 1, 2023, according to figures published by the Federal Office of statistics (OFS). This is the third consecutive decline.

If the market is tense, the situation varies greatly depending on the cantons and regions. The lowest vacancy rate is in Zug and Geneva (0.42% each). It reaches 0.98% in the canton of Vaud, 1.38% in Fribourg, 1.69% in Valais and 1.85% in Neuchâtel. The Jura stands out in two ways. While it already had the highest rate in Switzerland, it increased further, recording the strongest progression, by 0.21 points to 3.17%. Only Solothurn (2.39%) and Ticino (2.17%) also show a value above 2%.
