Sword-Wielding Attacker Wounds Several at Swedish School in Fagersta

An attacker armed with a sword wounded several people on Friday at the Brinell School in Fagersta, central Sweden, prompting a massive emergency response.

The Incident at Brinell School in Fagersta

The violent encounter unfolded during the early afternoon on Friday, August 21, 2026, at the Brinell School, locally known as Brinellskolan, located in Fagersta, northwest of Stockholm. The city has a population of approximately 12,000 residents. According to an official statement released by the Fagersta municipality, an assailant armed with a sword entered the school and wounded several people before being detained by police.

Police spokesperson Pelle Vamstad stated that emergency services received the initial alarm in the early afternoon, prompting an immediate deployment of officers, ambulances, and a police helicopter. Local newspaper Aftonbladet reported that police shot the suspect in the leg. Authorities have not released a definitive tally of the injured, though confirmation was issued that officers are conducting checks inside the school.

Immediate Official Response and Community Lockdown

In the wake of the violence, the local municipal government established a crisis center in a sports hall near the school. The government of Västmanland county confirmed that police, fire services, and healthcare workers are caring for those affected.

As a precautionary measure, several nearby schools were placed under lockdown, and roadblocks were set up. Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson took to the social media platform X to address the incident, lamenting a “serious incident” in Fagersta “right after the summer break.” “There are reports of injured people. We do not yet know what lies behind the act, but we know that the police are working very intensively,” Kristersson stated, adding that his thoughts are with all those affected.

Sweden’s Recent History of School and Public Facility Violence

Friday’s assault follows a series of violent acts in recent years. In February 2025, a 35-year-old man shot and killed 10 people at an adult education centre in Örebro. According to investigators, the suspect’s actions appeared to stem from intense psychological and monetary troubles alongside an intent to end his life. During March 2022, an 18-year-old pupil assaulted a secondary educational facility in Malmö using a blade, resulting in the deaths of two educators. A separate fatal incident took place in October 2015 within Trollhättan, claiming three lives during an educational facility attack driven by racial hatred. The attacker, who was carrying a sword, was subsequently shot and killed by police.
