Synology DS223: a very classic new 2-bay NAS

At the beginning of the year, Synology is renewing its range of two-bay NAS. Concomitantly with the announcement of powerful DS723+ which will be sold around 400 €, the brand presented a more affordable model. the DS223 therefore has two slots for 3.5″ hard drives and can handle up to 36 TB.

It is equipped with a 64-bit 4-core ARM chip at 1.7 GHz (Realtek RTD1619B), 2 GB of DDR4 RAM and a fan to cool it all down. The manufacturer announces a sound volume of 14.6 dB (A) and a consumption of 17.34 W in use or 4.08 W in standby.

Its connectivity consists of a Gigabit Ethernet port and three USB-A 3.0 ports (up to 5 Gbit / s), including one at the front. This Synology DS223 is therefore generally much less advanced than the DS723+, but it will suffice for basic tasks, such as file sharing or backup. It can even be used for multimedia use with its hardware acceleration for transcoding H.265/HEVC 10-bit videos.

The DS223 is in fact an evolution of the DS218 released five years ago. It resumes its case by mainly integrating a more powerful processor. Of course, it runs DiskStation Manager, Synology’s very complete operating system. The price and release date of the DS223 have not yet been communicated. The DS218 is currently sold 289 €.
