Synology has released ActiveProtect Manager 2.0 (APM 2.0), significantly expanding its all-in-one data protection appliance lineup with native cloud recovery capabilities, software-based volume encryption, and broader workload support across Amazon EC2, Azure Virtual Machines, Proxmox VE, Nutanix AHV, and Google Workspace environments.
Broader Workload Coverage Across Enterprise Environments
Launched initially in early 2025 around the dedicated DP hardware appliance series—including the DP320, DP340, and DP5200 boxes running APM software rather than the traditional DiskStation Manager (DSM) operating system—Synology’s data protection architecture is shifting toward hybrid multi-cloud integration. According to reports from IT-Connect and Express Computer, APM 2.0 brings vital support for five new enterprise platforms. For infrastructure engineers, the inclusion of Proxmox VE stands out as a direct alternative to Proxmox Backup Server, addressing growing open-source virtualization adoption accelerated by recent vendor licensing shifts.
Philip Wong, Chairman and CEO of Synology, noted in published statements that AI-driven threats have fundamentally altered the data protection landscape. “AI has turned cyber threats into a force enterprises can no longer outpace, driving organisations to seek data protection that is both dependable and accessible,” he explained.
Cross-Platform Recovery and Direct Cloud Restorations
APM 2.0 introduces flexible cross-platform restoration paths, allowing IT teams to execute Virtual-to-Virtual (V2V), Cloud-to-Virtual (C2V), Virtual-to-Cloud (V2C), and Physical-to-Virtual (P2C) migrations. If a production hypervisor goes down, workloads can shift seamlessly between platforms—such as restoring a virtual machine exported from VMware directly into a Proxmox VE cluster.
Furthermore, direct cloud-to-cloud restoration bypasses the on-premises hardware appliance entirely. As detailed by IT-Connect, backup copies stored in Amazon S3, Azure Blob Storage, or Wasabi can be pulled straight into an Amazon EC2 instance or Azure VM. This architecture reduces recovery times.
Jia-Yu Liu, Executive Vice President of the Synology Data Protection Group, emphasized the strategic shift of the update. The new tooling “extends protection coverage to major clouds, hypervisors, and SaaS platforms, while introducing AI-driven threat detection that shifts data protection from reactive recovery to proactive defence,” Liu stated.
Efficiency Engines and Security Updates
Under the hood, data reduction is handled by the Synology Unified Reduction Engine (SURE), combining Changed Block Tracking with global source- and server-side deduplication. When backing up cloud instances like Amazon EC2 or Azure VMs, APM spins up temporary, ephemeral working instances in the cloud, paired with source-side deduplication to limit transfers and egress costs.

Security-wise, APM 2.0 introduces software-based volume encryption with locally managed keys to safeguard data at rest against physical hardware theft. However, advanced AI features—such as machine-learning-based anomaly detection (tracking mass deletions and abnormal entropy changes), third-party antivirus engine integrations with Microsoft Defender, Bitdefender, and ESET, and automated fallback routines to last-known-good states—are scheduled to deploy in the upcoming APM 2.1 update.
For administrative oversight, the system now pushes SNMP hardware status alerts, backup telemetry, and restoration logs directly into monitoring tools like Zabbix and Splunk, making it easier for enterprise administrators to fold backup health metrics into broader security operations centers.
