T-Mobile says it hasn’t “largely blocked” iCloud Private Relay, blames iOS 15.2 bug for errors

T-Mobile has officially recognized a bug that prevented some subscribers from using iCloud Private Relay when connected to a cellular network. In a statement to., T-Mobile blamed this on a bug in iOS 15.2 and said it had “not largely blocked” iCloud Private Relay.

It’s also important to note that this bug does not only affect T-Mobile subscribers, as the company states in its statement. Instead, it’s a bug that seems to affect iOS 15.2 in general rather than T-Mobile in particular. The problem is also still present in the latest version of iOS 15.3 beta.

The full statement reads as follows:

Overnight, our team identified that in iOS version 15.2 some default device settings are disabled. We shared this with Apple. It is not specific to T-Mobile. Again, we haven’t largely blocked iCloud Phone Relay.

A solution to the problem that worked for. while testing is to go to settings, then choose Cellular, then choose your plan and make sure “Limit IP Address Tracking” is enabled. Make sure to follow these steps when WiFi is turned off and you are connected to your cellular network.

T-Mobile has acknowledged, however, that these are situations where it is necessary to block iCloud Private Relay for technical reasons. Note, if your account or line has content moderation or parental controls enabled, you will not be able to use iCloud Private Relay when you are connected to cellular.

In a separate statement, T-Mobile explained:

Customers who have chosen plans and features with content filtering (for example, parental controls) do not have access to iCloud Private Relay to allow these services to function as intended. All other customers have no restrictions.

A source also confirmed to. that this also applies to some existing plans which include the Netflix on Us benefit and have activated family allowances.

When this issue was first revealed on Monday, the concern was that T-Mobile was completely blocking access to iCloud Private Relay. This came after a carrier in Europe signed an open letter expressing concern over the impact of Private Relay. Operators wrote that this feature prevents networks and servers from accessing “vital network data and metadata and could impact” the operator’s ability to effectively manage telecommunications networks. “
