A shaky video, police hundreds and big cat experts: the sighting of an alleged lioness has been occupying the German capital for days. First, politicians and the police confirmed that the animal was probably a big cat.
The all-clear followed shortly followingwards. Experts analyzed that the shape of the creature’s body on the nocturnal recordings in no way indicates a lioness. Rather, it can be assumed that it was a wild boar.
The veterinarian and found animal officer of the Potsdam-Mittelmark district, Michaela Ebeling, was temporarily involved in the search for the mysterious animal. In an interview with the “Märkische Allgemeine”, she is not convinced of the wild boar theory:
“If you classify the video as real, like the authorities, you can see: The animal in it has a short, round head and round ears – like the head of a big cat. Wild boar have a long head with short, pointed ears. That would be a very mutated boar.”
In addition, the video evidence as such is “difficult”. Apart from the head, “the rest of the animal looks weird,” says the veterinarian. Nevertheless, she considers the maker of the recording to be credible. Ultimately, one can only wait.
