The Dutch prosecutor’s office said that Europol, in cooperation with the Serbian police, was able to bust a large drug ring. Eight people were arrested, including Petkovic, according to the Serbian newspaper Blic. Other members of the criminal organization are still being sought.
The group is also suspected of illegally manufacturing and distributing narcotics. The investigations are still ongoing.
Petkovic and his colleagues are said to have helped organize a cocaine transport from South America to Rotterdam. The 115 kilos were taken to the Belgian city of Arlon. That’s where the police struck.
As “Blic” reports, a company was involved that bought concrete slabs and then later prepared them with cocaine packages in a hangar in Belgium. 22 such plates were found, each containing three packets of cocaine weighing almost a kilo each. Officers also found other drug packages.
According to the public prosecutor’s office, the cocaine found in Arlon was to be taken to Trier by a German freight forwarder and then to London for resale.
Petkovic is currently the sporting director at Serbian club OFK Belgrade. There is no comment from the club yet.
Between 2001 and 2003 Petkovic played for VfL Wolfsburg and 1. FC Nürnberg. His almost World Cup participation in 2006 is legendary. He was called up to the Serbia and Montenegro squad to replace the injured Mirko Vucinic, but withdrew from the squad at short notice. The reason: His father Ilija Petkovic was national coach at the time, so there was a lot of media criticism of the nomination.
Now he faces jail!
