Columbus, OH – A recent statewide initiative, dubbed “Uniquely Ohio,” is set to launch this month, aiming to highlight the significant economic and cultural contributions of Ohio’s thriving wine industry. The Ohio Department of Agriculture (ODA) announced the program, designed to spotlight the growers, winemakers, and businesses that fuel this growing sector of the state’s economy.

Ohio’s wine industry is a substantial economic driver, generating $6.6 billion in economic activity and supporting over 40,000 full-time jobs, according to the ODA. The initiative comes as the state solidifies its position as the seventh-largest wine producer in the country, boasting more than 430 licensed wine manufacturers. The industry likewise contributes $1.9 billion in wages statewide.

“Uniquely Ohio,” administered by the Ohio Grape Industries Committee, will focus on storytelling and outreach to connect consumers with the diverse range of wineries across the state. The campaign aims to showcase the creativity and dedication of those involved in Ohio winemaking, emphasizing the integral role these businesses play in local communities and the broader agricultural landscape.

Boosting Tourism and Local Economies

Beyond its economic impact, Ohio’s wine industry is a significant draw for tourism. More than 2.3 million wine-related tourists visit Ohio wineries each year, contributing to economic growth in both rural and urban areas. The ODA hopes the “Uniquely Ohio” campaign will further amplify this effect, encouraging residents and visitors alike to explore the state’s wine regions.

Brian Baldridge, Director of the Ohio Department of Agriculture, emphasized the importance of the industry, stating, “Ohio wineries—and the people behind them—have created an incredible range of wines and experiences rooted in their communities.” He added, “The Uniquely Ohio campaign encourages people to discover those wines and experiences right here in our home state, while highlighting the important role these businesses play in agriculture, tourism, and local economies across Ohio.”

A Growing Industry Rooted in Ohio’s Landscape

Ohio’s suitability for winemaking stems from its unique geological and climatic conditions. The state’s mineral-rich soil, a legacy of glacial deposits, combined with a favorable climate and access to water sources, provides an ideal environment for grape cultivation. There are currently 1,400 acres dedicated to grape growing across the state, according to the Ohio Department of Agriculture. Beyond wine production, Ohio is also home to 21 businesses focused on grape juice, jam, and jelly production, further diversifying the state’s agricultural offerings.

The initiative builds on existing efforts to support the wine industry, including recognition of June as Ohio Wine Month by TourismOhio. This month-long celebration spotlights vineyards and wineries throughout the state, encouraging both residents and visitors to sample locally produced wines.

Looking ahead, the ODA anticipates that “Uniquely Ohio” will foster continued growth for small businesses within the industry and reinforce wine’s position as a vital cultural and economic asset for the state. The campaign’s success will likely be measured by increased winery visitation, heightened consumer awareness of Ohio wines, and sustained economic contributions from the industry.
