A Pattern of Manipulation and Abuse
Weldon recounted to The Associated Press how Gardner exploited a vulnerable time in her life – her parents’ divorce – to establish control and gain her trust. He initially presented himself as a supportive figure, offering a listening ear and consistent presence, but his behavior gradually escalated to inappropriate touching and emotionally manipulative tactics. According to Weldon, this began with prolonged hugs and pats on the back, eventually progressing to unwanted physical contact during training sessions and stretching exercises.
“He sought to fill that role by telling me I could tell him anything and that he woudl always be there for me,” Weldon stated, recognizing now that this was a calculated move to isolate and control her.
