The last period witnessed an exacerbation of the phenomenon of divorce, to the extent that the term “divorce” has become a habit that we hear daily between newlyweds, and it is no longer limited to the elderly, but rather it has become the first solution that is used to deal with marital problems.

President Abdel-Fattah El-Sisi said that the percentage of families with cases of separation has increased significantly over the past 20 years.

President Sisi added – during a telephone interview with the “Tahrir Hall” program broadcast on “Sada Al-Balad” channel, presented by Azza Mustafa, that we need to discuss family issues honestly, impartially and without bidding, noting that it is one of the most serious issues that affect our society, its cohesion and its future.

Reasons for divorce

For his part, lawyer Mohamed Fayez says that the high divorce rates are not limited to Egypt only, but are prevalent in most Arab societies, explaining that the causes of divorce are multiple, most notably poor choice and the absence of parity between the two parties, as well as the interference of families in the lives of their children.

He stressed to “Masrawy”, the necessity of having rehabilitation programs for those who are regarding to marry to be aware of the nature of married life and its challenges and how to overcome problems, explaining that the speed in choosing a life partner is one of the most important reasons for the high rates of divorce in recent years, and it is increasing due to the economic and social conditions imposed on spouses in the beginning of their lives.

He pointed out that the phenomenon is very prevalent in the first year of marriage, a period when the spouses get to know each other and often do not get along in the beginning and end up with separation.

Divorce rate in Egypt in 13 years

According to the statistics of the Central Agency for Public Mobilization and Statistics, there is a continuous rise in the number of annual divorce cases in Egypt during the period from 2008 until the last report issued on divorce rates in 2020.

The Central Agency revealed that the total number of divorce cases during the year 2020, which amounted to 222 thousand and 36 cases, varied between divorce, final divorce and divorce.

According to the agency’s indicators, the number of divorce cases during 2019 reached regarding 225.9 thousand cases, and in 2018, the number of divorce cases reached 211.6 thousand cases, and during 2017 it amounted to 198.3 thousand cases, and in 2016 it reached 192.1 thousand cases.

The indicators of the agency showed that in 2015 there were 199.9 thousand cases of divorce, while the year 2014 witnessed regarding 180,3 thousand cases, and during 2013 it amounted to 162.6 thousand cases, while the cases of divorce were recorded in 2012 regarding 155,3 thousand cases.

During 2011, the year witnessed regarding 151.9 thousand cases, while 149.4 thousand divorces took place in 2010, while 2009 witnessed regarding 141.5 thousand cases, and the lowest percentage was in 2008, which witnessed only regarding 84.4 thousand cases.
