The Impact of Fishing Licenses on Scarcity of Fish: Urgent Call for Government Action in Rufisque-Ouest
2023-11-23 10:49:18
The mayor of the commune of Rufisque-Ouest on Sunday urged the Minister of Fisheries and Maritime Economy to speak out clearly on the issue of fishing licenses, regularly raised as the cause of the Barça wala barsakh phenomenon. Alioune Mar spoke during a general assembly organized by a committee bringing together associations in the municipality. “The fishermen’s only reason is to say that it is the fishing agreements which have meant that there are no more fish at sea level (…) On this point, we are asking the ministry of Fisheries to convene all fishing stakeholders to show in a transparent manner the impact of fishing licenses currently on the scarcity of fish,” pleaded the councilor, ensuring that this scarcity has become undeniable. “It’s an observation. But is it only due to fishing licenses? I think that the Minister of Fisheries must invite the stakeholders to discuss it, so that we no longer mention fishing licenses as the reason for this phenomenon,” continued Mr. Mar. “We are a people of fishermen. We only have the sea and are doing what we can to stem this phenomenon. But the State should come to our aid,” insisted Mr. Mar. This meeting, organized in the public square of Diokoul Ndiayenne, saw the presence of the community’s active forces. Ndèye ji reew Palla Mbengue, for his part, denounced the actions of industrialists in the sector who take advantage of their position to seal agreements with foreign boats. He therefore urged the minister to look into this issue to block “these profiteers” who undermine the activity of artisanal fishermen. The recommendations resulting from the series of meetings initiated by these associations will be recorded and submitted to the various authorities. Said recommendations revolve, according to Birane Sarr, member of the Environmental Issues Committee, around jobs for young people, illegal emigration and education. “Ndèye ji reew Palla Mbengue and I took the responsibility of transmitting the conclusions to those responsible, namely the Prefect, the sub-prefect, and even if necessary, to the ministers for the resolution of this problem,” he said. this regarding Alioune Mar.

LNG Carriers and the Yamal LNG Plant: Uninterrupted Shipments Despite Regional Tensions
2023-09-24 22:20:00
The Vladimir Vize, one of the ice-breaking LNG carriers used to export liquefied natural gas produced by the Yamal LNG plant in northern Russia, is currently on technical shutdown at the Damen Shiprepair shipyard in Brest. The latter has also been used to welcoming this type of ship since the Siberian production unit was put into service at the end of 2017. And the war in Ukraine has not changed anything since if imports to Europe of Russian gas via gas pipelines have been interrupted, those in the form of LNG transported by these ice-breaking LNG carriers have never stopped since they are not subject to sanctions. Especially since the ships are not armed under the Russian flag and mostly belong to foreign shipowners.
