The Ogasawara or Bonin Islands are an archipelago of 30 tropical islands regarding 1,000 kilometers south of Tokyo. Administratively they belong to Japan. The only inhabited islands in the complex are Chichi-Jima and Haha-Jima.
The islands administratively belong to the Ogasawara Sub-prefectural Ward, which is part of the Tokyo Prefectural Ward. The sub-prefectural division also includes the Volcano Islands, which traditionally do not belong to the Ogasawara Islands. The current population of the Ogasawara Islands is approximately 2,440, 2,000 on Chichi-Jima and 440 on Haha-Jima. Another island, Iwo Jima, is inhabited in the sub-prefectural division, where military personnel reside.
