Manhattan – Kansas State football survived a scare in its home opener on Saturday,defeating North Dakota 38-35 in a back-and-forth contest. The Fighting Hawks gave everything they had to upset the Wildcats, but key plays from Kansas State’s best players helped them secure their first win of the season.

Kansas State’s defense forced a 3-and-out from North Dakota with 1:45 left in the game. The Fighting Hawks held a 35-31 lead as the Wildcats received the ball on their own 19-yard line.

K-state’s Avery Johnson led the Wildcats on an 81-yard scoring drive that lasted 1:03. The drive featured a drop pass and a few short running plays, but it didn’t discourage Johnson. The junior was pleasant when things were going awry in the closing moments.

The big play came when Johnson scrambled for 25 yards into the red zone. On the following play, Johnson found running back Joe Jackson for a 6-yard touchdown reception to give K-State the 38-35 lead.

“Pre-snap seeing guys’ eyes glued to the defenders knowing that they probably weren’t going to have someone for me,” Johnson said. “I scrambled kind of into a twist, but our tackle did a good job of getting hands on the guy. Then it was just green grass from there.”

K-State head coach Chris Klieman was very complimentary of his star quarterback during the final possession.

“That’s going to be a defining drive for avery Johnson,” Klieman said. “He was calm and cool and made play after play after play, even when we had a drop.It didn’t bug him and he came back and made a play.”

Last week, Kansas State suffered a 24-21 loss to Iowa State in Dublin, Ireland. Klieman doesn’t want to use the long travel as an excuse for affecting the team’s performance in the game against North Dakota but acknowledged the difficulties.

“All of the coaches that I’ve talked to that went over there said you’re going to have a hangover game,” klieman said. “It’s either going to be game two, game three, game four. I look at our schedule and we have four games on the road. I hope this was our hangover game.”

The Wildcats will host Arizona next Saturday.
