Spencer Township, MI – August 7, 2025 – Dr. Joseph Luea, a highly respected and compassionate physician practicing in the Lansing area, tragically died Monday after being struck by a pickup truck while jogging in Spencer Township, northwest of Greenville. He was 53.
According to the Michigan State police, the incident occurred shortly after 4 p.m. on Lincoln Lake Avenue NE. the driver of the truck remained at the scene and promptly contacted 911.
Dr. Luea was in Grand Rapids attending a faith retreat when the accident occurred. Friends and colleagues describe him as a dedicated medical professional with a patient panel exceeding 2,500 individuals.
“A compassionate, dedicated physician, dr. Luea was beloved by his patients and committed his professional life to the noble calling of caring for those in our community,” McLaren Health Care stated in a release. “He will be remembered and mourned by the McLaren team and the many lives he served and impacted.”
Beyond his medical practice, Dr.Luea was deeply involved in the Capital Homeschool Athletic Program (CHAP), where he volunteered as a basketball and cross country coach. Brian Killian, a Lansing-area chiropractor and fellow CHAP volunteer, spoke of Dr. Luea’s character.
“He was a man of really true character,” Killian said. “He was someone who really prayed about his practice and his family. He balanced his family life and his volunteer work and his medical practice in a good way that showed he had a true heart for everybody he came in contact with.”
Colleagues consistently highlighted dr. Luea’s positive demeanor and genuine care for his patients. “He was easy-to-smile, happy-go-lucky, just a really nice human being,” said a colleague who wished to remain anonymous.”The glass is half-full,a guy you enjoyed talking with.”
Dr. Luea was also an avid fisherman and maintained an active lifestyle, prioritizing time with his family and his faith. His dedication to his beliefs was a cornerstone of his life, according to those who knew him.
