The Director of the World Health Organization, Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, confirmed that the gaps in the strategies to tackle Covid-19 this year continue to create ideal conditions for the emergence of a new variant, as parts of China are witnessing a rise in the number of cases of the virus.

The WHO director’s comments mark a change in tone following months of saying the world was never in a better position to end the pandemic.

“We are very close to being able to say that the pandemic emergency phase is over, but we have not yet reached that goal,” Tedros said today, Friday.
