After the election victory of the China-critical candidate Ching-te Lai in Taiwan, the regime in Beijing continues to insist on “reunification”. But there is currently no threat of war, say experts.
Taipei/Beijing. The Chinese leadership once again revealed this weekend that reality in Beijing is primarily an ideological category. In fact, there is not the slightest doubt that the presidential election in Taiwan represents a bitter defeat for China’s head of state, Xi Jinping. On the outside, however, people simply refuse to acknowledge the obvious facts.
The Taiwan Affairs Office in Beijing said in a statement that the election could not change “the general trend toward inevitable reunification” with the mainland: “The results of the two elections show that the Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) is not in able to represent prevailing public opinion”.
