Take Two removes an AI mod from GTAV

Sentient Streets was a mod in the prototype state which nevertheless foreshadowed advances as promising as they were worrying: it injected twenty non-player characters (NPCs) into the GTAV Story mode, coupled with an AI, capable of having a complete and realistic conversation with the player equipped with a microphone. Far from having completely random discussions, these NPCs were programmed to be part of a scenario in which the player had to carry out the investigation.

It’s hard not to let our minds fantasize about the possibility of chatting, in an open world video game, with any character, however minor, and obtaining a realistic and complex conversation. Of course, this currently remains in the realm of the imagination, but the use AI in a Skyrim mod for example proved that it was not impossible.

It’s hard to say for sure what bothered Take Two and Rockstar’s lawyers the most about this modder’s work. It’s clear that the studio is keen to keep very tight control over what players and indie developers do with their babies, but content for the game’s offline mode has historically been very loosely focused.

This hostility is neither pleasing nor understandable, since GTAV owes the sustainability of its sales today precisely to the existence of the RP communities and modders.
