Taking Action Against Qur’an Burning: OIC Urges Islamic Nations to Address Denmark and Sweden

The OIC called on Islamic countries to take appropriate measures in their relations with Denmark and Sweden over the Koran burning incident.

The Organization of Islamic Countries has expressed its disappointment that the two countries have not taken any action in the incident so far. The decision was taken in an emergency meeting called at the OIC headquarters in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia.

An emergency meeting of the Foreign Ministers was held amid the burning and desecration of copies of the Holy Quran in Denmark and Sweden. The meeting was held at the Jeddah headquarters of the Organization of Islamic Corporation or OIC, a group of 57 Islamic countries. OIC Secretary General Hussain Ibrahim Taha called on the Swedish and Danish authorities to take measures at the official level to prevent the recurrence of incidents of desecration of the Qur’an.

He also expressed disappointment with both the countries for not taking any action in this regard so far. He directed member states to take sovereign measures as deemed appropriate in their relations with these two countries. He also stated in the meeting that the concerns of the member states regarding the incident have been conveyed to the governments of Sweden and Denmark, the Secretary General of the United Nations and the President of the Security Council. He informed that such provocations have reached an alarming level and conveyed to them the dismay of the Member States at the attitude of the authorities who allowed such acts to be carried out.

The Secretary General congratulated Saudi Arabia and Iraq for convening an emergency meeting of Foreign Ministers over the incident. At the meeting, Saudi Foreign Minister Prince Faisal bin Farhan shared the importance of uniting the values โ€‹โ€‹of tolerance and respect among peoples, religions and cultures. He also condemned the desecration of the Holy Quran.
