Diabetes Awareness Month

November is Diabetes Awareness Month. Diabetes is a disease characterized by the body’s inability to control blood sugar levels. Uncontrolled levels of blood sugar, or sugar, can lead to serious health complications such as kidney disease.

The most common form of diabetes is type 2 and, after the age of 40, it is recommended that you have a diabetes screening test every three years. The risk is increased by certain factors, such as the presence of diabetes in the family; hypertension; high cholesterol levels; or excess weight, especially when the excess is localized in the stomach.

Take control of your health! You can prevent or delay type 2 diabetes and the complications it causes by making healthy choices:

Reduce your alcohol consumption and stop smoking.

Opt for traditional foods as a nutritious alternative. Make balanced choices when purchasing prepared meals. To drink a lot of water. Aim to generally spend between 30 and 60 minutes per day doing activities such as hunting, household chores or walking.

For other information about diabetes, contact your healthcare provider at your local health center.
